Club Notes 12-09-2019

The past week was a busy one for teams at all age groups. On Monday 2/9/19 the U14 footballers took on Clonakilty 2 in the championship in Ardfield. Having struggled all year to field due to limited numbers it was a positive achievement to be able to field. This was due to the welcome contribution of some younger players who didn’t let themselves or the team down. The group put in a great effort and were well in the game until the later stages when the greater physical strength and being able to bring on fresh legs made the difference. Victory went to Clonakilty in the end on the score 6-9 to 2-9. Team Mark McCarthy, Donal O’Donovan, Patrick O’Driscoll, Jerome McCarthy, Calum Murphy, Luke Nowtinski, Liam Tobin (0-1), Cian O’Donoghue (0-2), Oran O’Donovan(1-3), Colin O’Donovan(0-1), Adam O’Donovan(1-0), Killian Whelton(0-2).

The minor footballers played Clann na Gael in the championship on Thursday 5/9/19 in Unionhall. The team started slowly and were 3 points down after 10 minutes. Settling into the game the defence improved and getting an advantage around the middle of the field, they were able to push on to give the forwards the opportunities and were ahead at half time 2-5 to 0-7. Adding two quick fire goals at the start of the second half gave them the cushion necessary and while Clann na Gael responded towards the end of the third quarter the Kilmacs settled again to push on and win on the score 5-11 to 2-9. Keith Whelton showed his leadership throughout with some fine scores, Cillian Sheehan’s ball winning ability was important with good help around the middle from Jamie Ronan and Eoghan Burns was good in defence. Team Christy Wilson, Eoghan Burns, Owen Tobin, Paudie Gore, Adrian Gore, Billy Murphy, Odhran Kerrisk, Jamie Ronan, Cian Minehane, Cillian Sheehan, John Keating, David Whelton, Keith Whelton, Shane O’Sullivan, Denis White, Eoghan O’Donovan, Eoin Brickley, Kevin McCarthy, James Hodnett, Liam McCarthy, Connor Burns.

On Saturday morning 7/9/19 the U10s welcomed Gabriels Rangers to Leap for an enjoyable game of football.

Owen Tobin was part of the St Patricks U 16hurling team that beat Ahan Gaels in the West Cork final in Clonakilty on Sunday 8/9/19. Recovering from a slow start, the team was 0-7 to 0-1 down after 20mins, the team put in an excellent performance from there to the end to dominate the game and win on the score 4-11 to 0-9. A welcome boost for those interested in promoting hurling in the area.

On Saturday evening last (7/9/19) Junior C Footballers played host to St Colums in the Quarter Final of the championship. With a good blend of youth and experience available, the team found their rhythm quickly and were in a commanding position at half time, leading by 2-9 to 1-1. With a good cushion from the first half, the second was a much scrappier affair and with a commanding lead, the bench was emptied, and the lads ran out comfortable 2-13 to 1-2 winners. This was a big boost after the Junior A’s championship exit and means the team have setup a semi-final clash with Kilmeen.
